Dr Sonhee Park Shared That B9 Deficiency Increases Risk of Birth Defects

Dr Sonhee Park, Senior Research Scientist in Research & Development of Shaklee Corporation (USA) emphasised that deficiency in nutrients such as Vitamin B9 (folate) is highly prevalent in pregnancy and breastfeeding women and their infants. Deficiency in Vitamin B9 during pregnancy is associated with increased risk of birth defects and in B12, iodine, and iron with other common complications in infants and mothers.

Organised by one of Malaysia’s leading nutrition companies, Shaklee Products (M) Sdn Bhd (“Shaklee Malaysia”), the expert roundtable session themed All About Fertility & Pregnancy: Truths & Myths” also saw other expert panellists, namely Dr Mathi Arasu Muthusamy, Fertility Specialist & Medical Director of Fertility Associates and Dr Nurzarina Abdul Rahman, Founder and Certified Lactation Counsellor of Gravidities Consultancy, discuss topics surrounding pregnancy, breastfeeding and fertility.

Nutrition is key in all stages of life, especially in the reproductive years for women who plan on conceiving. As the saying goes, “a healthy mother makes a healthy baby.” While every mother wants the best for her children, nutrition plays a fundamental role in paving a conducive environment for fertility to take place (pre-conceptional), a healthy pregnancy (prenatal), and a sustainable motherhood journey especially during breastfeeding (postnatal),” said Park. Vitamin B9 deficiency during pregnancy has been found to increase the risk of birth defects, such as spina bifida and other serious and irreversible birth defects in the brain, spinal cords, and heart. Associated with the development of neurological and cognitive functions of the foetus and infant, B12 and iodine are also critical vitamin and mineral for expecting mothers to consume optimum levels. According to the Ministry of Health in Malaysia, expectant mothers are recommended to consume 600 mcg of folic acid, 4.5 mcg of B12, and 200 mcg of iodine per day.1

Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) is a nutrient that will be transferred to the baby during both pregnancy and breastfeeding phases and is essential for brain, eye and nervous system development. However, since growing babies rely on their mothers for DHA supply, it is important for mothers to consume sufficient DHA. Calcium is another essential nutrient for baby’s bone and tooth formation. Calcium loss from mother’s bone will be increased to meet baby’s calcium needs if her diet is lacking in calcium. Hence, it is important to consume sufficient calcium during pregnancy and throughout the breastfeeding period for her own bone health and for baby’s strong bones and teeth. Thus, a careful dietary intake with these nutrients in mind is critical for both the mother and the baby.

Nutrition exerts an important influence on pregnancy outcomes.2 Over the years, multiple research have pointed out the value of nutrition interventions to help women achieve adequate diet for a normal, stable pregnancy.

Essential nutrition in the prenatal and postnatal stages contributes to several factors namely:
  • Reduce the risk of anaemia in the mother
  • Reduce risk of birth defects of the offspring
  • Restore nutrient loss during lactation period (postnatal)

My most favourite festive, Christmas is just around the corner. Asia Pacific 10 Most Well-Proportioned Faces Unveiled

Merz, known for the only U.S. FDA-cleared, non-invasive skin lifting and tightening ultrasound device, Ulthera, revealed the 10 well-proportioned faces in Asia Pacific. Merz also announced the launch of a new scientific guidelines, the first such scientific guidelines1, at the 38th Annual Meeting of the In Merz, known for the only U.S. FDA-cleared, non-invasive skin lifting and tightening ultrasound device, Ulthera, revealed the 10 well-proportioned faces in Asia Pacific ternational Society for Dermatological Surgery (ISDS) 2017, to help aesthetic doctors assess well-proportioned faces in Asians.
The “MAAT1 Golden Ratio Search” was the first in Asia and (a) sought to provide information to empower women to better understand facial proportions relative to attractiveness, and (b) was an integral part of the launch of the first scientific guidelines1 that provides a holistic approach in aesthetic treatments to assess a well-proportioned faces in Asians. The region-wide search was a structured programme developed to support the objectives of the scientific guidelines, which is to bring science to life.

The “MATT2 Golden Ratio Search” was conducted in 10 countries to demonstrate that well-proportioned facial types transcend ethnicities and geographical borders. More than 3,000 submissions were received from Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Korea, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, Thailand and Vietnam.
The “MAAT2 Golden Ratio Search” used the science of measurements to create awareness on symmetrical face ratios relative to beauty. This knowledge of facial proportions and shapes gives women more positive control over their facial appearances, and ultimately life,” said Salini Muniandy, the most well-proportioned face in Malaysia.

The big-scale three-month “MAAT2 Golden Ratio Search” closed on 30 September 2017 and found the oval (67%), square, round, inverted triangle (9% respectively), and oblong (7%)2 were the most common facial shapes among the 46 Malaysian women entrants between 21 - 44 years old. The oval (67%), square (13%), round (9%), inverted triangle (7%) and oblong (5%)3 were the most common facial shapes among the almost 3,000 submissions from Asia between 21 - 64 years old. The search for well-proportioned faces also observed the oval facial shapes fitted the Golden Ratio (facial height to width ratio), Horizontal facial proportion and Facial symmetry most closely. The 10 most well-proportioned faces are oval shaped.

Aesthetic doctors agreed oval is the most preferred facial shape among Asians1, and the new scientific guidelines, the first of such guidelines1, would be able to help aesthetic doctors assess well-proportioned faces in Asians, provides recommendations on the customisation and combination use of aesthetic procedures on the upper, middle and lower face, including strategies to improve facial shapes in Asians. The new guidelines also includes recommendations for early enhancement, restoration and beautification of Asian faces.1
