1 in 3 People in Malaysia, Southeast Asia & Hong Kong are Looking for a New Job; 2023 Remains a Jobseekers’ Market

Despite a possible economic slowdown, 2023 remains to be a jobseekers’ market in Southeast Asia and Hong Kong – including Malaysia – according to SEEK, the parent company of Asia’s leading online employment marketplaces JobStreet and JobsDB. This is backed by findings from a new study, titled “What Job Seekers Wish Employers Knew: Unlocking the Future of Recruitment”, released by SEEK, the Boston Consulting Group (BCG) and The Network, a global alliance of recruitment websites which SEEK’s JobStreet and JobsDB are a part of.

The study – which surveyed 97,324 respondents in Malaysia, Indonesia, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Singapore and Thailand – found that 34% of talent surveyed are actively looking for a new job. The top three motivations for searching for a new job are: looking for a more interesting position or higher seniority (49%), lacking opportunities for upward career progress at current place (30%) and unsatisfied with salary and benefits at current job (27%).

Talent feel confident to look out for new opportunities despite fears of recession as majority surveyed are aware of their attractiveness to employers. In fact, the study found that 74% of talent around the region are approached multiple times per year about new job opportunities — and 36% of those are approached every month.

In Malaysia, these numbers are equally high at 67% and 25% respectively. In addition, 70% of the region’s respondents and 69% of Malaysians feel that they are in a strong negotiating position when looking for a job.

Findings – The Malaysian Context

In Malaysia, the study found that 1 in 3 employees are willing to try different careers by reskilling to new professions, approximately 5% more than the regional average.

Top 3 most coveted talent (based on the percentage of respondents who are approached frequently with job opportunities) are in the areas of:

Information Technology
Digitisation, data science and artificial intelligence, and
Education, such as teachers and trainers.

Some 61% of Malaysians also expressed their preference for hybrid working models, translating to 7% higher than the global average.

With recognisable names in the entertainment industry such as heart-throbs Kahoe Hon, a talented actor who aspires to become a film director, and Aeril Zafrel, one of Malaysia most popular male influencer who holds lead roles in multiple romance and action movies, together with veteran actor Alvin Wong and all-rounder Nasz Sally, My Ofis invokes thought-provoking questions about the struggles and realities of pursuing a career in the entertainment industry as a passion versus a career.

Catered to urban multicultural viewers, My Ofis is a distinctive new genre with fresh content that hopes to influence audiences to think about what truly matters to them. The series follows closely the challenges each character has to go through to achieve their dreams and follow their own paths to success, synonymous with the challenges Malaysians currently face in the job market and at the workplace.

Qualitas: GP Clinics as First Line of Care for Mental Health

I believe that work is good for mental health but a negative working environment can lead to physical and mental health problems. It is sad to know that mental health issues in Malaysia is worrying. In response to this, homegrown and leading primary healthcare provider Qualitas Medical Group (‘Qualitas’) hosted a panel session to raise awareness and initiate robust discussions on mental health at the workplace. Themed, “Mental Health at the Workplace: The Unspoken Truth” was held at Sime Darby Convention Centre days ago.

It was a full house at the forum, the session was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Health, Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH), Malaysian Medical Association (MMA), the Malaysian Society for Occupational Safety and Health (MSOSH) as well as Third Party Administrators, corporate and industrial leaders. Approximately 100 guests from the public and private sector, as well as civil society has attended the forum.

The event was officiated by Yang Berhormat Puan Hannah Yeoh, Deputy Minister of Women, Family and Community Development. In her keynote speech, Yang Berhormat Puan Hannah Yeoh emphasized the pressing need to reduce the stigma on mental health issues within the community and the important role that general practitioners can play as the first line of care on mental health. YB also shared that the mental health issues in the country is increasing and the age is getting younger. This is indeed a worrying issues in Malaysia.

Delivering a keynote address at the session, Chairman and Managing Director of Qualitas Medical Group, Yang Berbahagia Dato’ Dr Noorul Ameen Mohamed Ishack said, “Mental health has been extensively discussed by key authorities, non-profit organisations for many years. Sadly, individuals suffering from depression and anxiety are reluctant to seek help as they fear the stigma of being stereotyped. The time has come for immediate practical actions to be taken by all stakeholders – The general practitioners should be empowered to play a more active and positive role in the management of mental health wellness; and for that, changes need to be made by the Government in empowering general practitioners to act as the gatekeeper on mental health.”

Monday Green

It's Monday again, another working week has started.

I have added a pack of Japanese flower jelly balls for my office plant this morning. I bought the light green flower balls from Daiso 1 Utama yesterday, at just RM5 per pack. The balls fitted the flower pot just well and I hope my plant will grow healthy. :D
