[Interview] Art Made for the Senses: Karim Noureldin x Samsung Art Store

Can a work of visual art be experienced as sound? For Karim Noureldin, it can. The Swiss artist creates abstract works that guide the eye across the composition like rhythm in music, revealing new details the longer they are viewed. Noureldin describes this as “a visual sound,” an idea rooted in drawing and reflected across works shaped by line, color, surface and space.

Noureldin’s “Brea” (2025) will be presented to view digitally as part of the new Art Basel in Basel 2026 Collection. Available exclusively on Samsung Art Store, the collection presents 24 works by Swiss and Switzerland-based artists represented by eight galleries participating in the fair. “Brea” was chosen for its distinct color palette and use of bold pattern, both central to Noureldin’s broader practice. Samsung Newsroom spoke with Noureldin about drawing, abstraction and what changes when art is experienced at home.

The Sensory Language of “Brea”

Q. “Brea” (2025) is part of the Art Basel in Basel 2026 Collection on Samsung Art Store. What can you share about the process behind this work?

“Brea” began with the process of drawing as a way to build an imagined space. I created it with pencil because drawing allows me to think, plan, imagine and picture at the same time. I have worked with pencil for a long time and I still see it as one of the most direct ways to begin an idea. The movement of drawing also feels close to writing words by hand.

Working on paper allows me to see a space that is not fully physical yet. I find it easier to create a three-dimensional world in this format than by painting on canvas. This is why drawing has remained so important to me. Its energy has been with me since early in my work as an artist and it is present in “Brea.”

Q. How do line, surface and structure work together in “Brea”?

In “Brea,” line, structure and surface are not separate elements. They build on each other. The lines create movement, the surfaces create depth and the structure holds these parts together. Through this relationship, the work can begin to feel like a space the viewer enters through their own perception. The author George Stolz has described “Brea” as creating a kind of spatiality through the way its surfaces come together. I think that is close to how I see the work.

Resonating Microcosms - Liquified Light Color, Sunrise and Sunset
The Rooftop Garden, which features countless ovoids, is an art space that transforms through changes in the natural environment and the presence of people.

Under the sun, the ovoids reflect the world around them.

As the sun sets, the ovoids begin to shine by themselves. When an ovoid is pushed by a person, blown by the wind, or hit by rain, it shines brightly and emits a sound tone as it rises back up on its own. The ovoids around it also respond one after another, resonating out the same sound tone and light color.

Kids' Craft Course at My Craft Studio, Desa Park City

Children love arts and crafts, in fact there are many benefits to engage them into arts and crafts. From foster their creativity to develop fine motor skills, arts and crafts help in both physical and social development for kids. Many parents know about this but we are too busy to work on crafts with our children in this fast pace era. Hence, I thought why not let it handle by the expert.
My Craft Studio is an experienced institute that offers educational course. All their courses are developed based on Montessori Education Concept. I was honoured to witness the newest outlet of My Craft Studio at Desa Park City just a week ago. Located at first floor of Waterfront, Desa Park City, I like that My Craft Studio is clean, spacious and a place full of imagination.
My Craft Studio uses teaching modules that have been carefully designed with children in mind. They prepare different arts and crafts material for children of different ages. It will eventually help the children to develop their motor skills, senses, imagination and teamwork skills.
For now, My Craft Studio at Desa Park City conducts two courses, namely Nursery Art Course (NAC) for children from ages 3 to 6 years old; and Multicultural Craft Course (MCC) for kids ages 7 to 12 years old. A uniform will be needed for all the students at My Craft Studio. We really love their pretty uniform, where it is yellow t shirt for NAC and a pilot uniform for MCC.

The Nando’s Art Initiative 2018 - YOUthReka

The Nando’s Art Initiative, known this year as YOUthReka, is back with the annual 2018 Art Competition. For 11 years, the initiative has remained a dedicated platform for creative youth from all walks of life to come together and showcase their amazing talents and imagination while also acting as a channel to expose their work to the masses.
"For over a decade now, we have focused on providing an avenue for these young artists to share their creativity with the public and make art more accessible to all. For a long time, and in fact until today, there is still a perception that art is only accessible to a very niche group of people, which is not true, because art can be created and enjoyed by anyone", said Mac Chung Lynn, Group CEO of Nando’s Malaysia.

This year, the competition received 468 submissions encompassing both the Fine Art and Digital Art category and the exhibition held from 14 August 2018 to 24 August 2018, showcased over 40 masterpieces from participants all over Malaysia. The exhibition also incorporated special additions aimed at not only developing these young creative talents but reached out to those who were interested in dabbling in the arts themselves.

Apart from the main shortlisted competition pieces, there were also eight additional art works created by local Autistic artists and a special ‘Pop-Art’ session with art collective Titikmerah. The Nando’s Art Initiative which has always been geared towards changing the lives of youth regardless of who they are or where they come from, has incorporated these additional artists into the exhibition to illustrate that creative talent is limitless and that art can be made and appreciated by anyone and everyone.
The exhibition and activities coincided with the announcement of the YOUthReka Art Competition 2018 winners and prize giving ceremony. The winners of the Grand Prize are Choo Ai Xin with her piece titled "Old Town Ipoh" in the Fine Art category and Chew Song Kee with his art piece "Crow Guest" in the Digital Art category. Joining them are Ong Cai Bin, grabbing 1st Runner-Up with her artwork "Peep's World II" and 2nd Runner-Up Lau Pik Yoke with her artwork "A View of the Past" in the Fine Art category.

D’Danze Academy Presents Enchanted Forest 2017

Enchanted Forest: The Story

Imagine you’re an incredibly curious child.

Everything around you is a mystery – who painted the sky blue, where the rainbow ends, what it feels like to fly like a bird and to dive like a fish – and you absolutely have to find out the truth, to uncover the answers to your questions, or that nagging feeling inside just won’t let you sleep at night.
Now imagine that in your house, there is a mysterious chest. It looks so very much like the treasure chest in that swashbuckling pirate adventure storybook Momma reads to you some nights. The only difference is, while the pirates got to open their treasure chest and marvel at the sight of their newly acquired riches, you are not allowed even a peek into the chest.
Why? Nobody will tell you why.

Jamie was that exact child, in that exact situation. A bad combination indeed, for that nagging, burning little “why” was the very “how” that the forbidden chest was opened. Out came the Curses – Poverty, Sickness, Depression, Hatred, Pride, Desire, Indolence, Cowardice – bringing misery and destruction to all mankind.

In the wake of such a tragedy, Jamie was approached by a little pixie. It took a little comforting and coaxing, but eventually, the child got up, determined to make amends, and followed the pixie into the Enchanted Forest.

The Curses were out there, and there was no way to recapture them. Instead, all Jamie could do was seek out the five Jewels.
But… why?

Nando’s Art Initiative presents Hug Yin Wan’s ‘The Crow’ Solo Exhibition

Nando’s Lot 123 is diving into the depths of reality with Nando’s Art Initiative 2015 Fine Art Grand Prize Winner Hug Yin Wan’s first solo art exhibition. As part of Nando’s constant support and dedication to the winners of Nando’s Art Initiative, Yin Wan will be showcasing his collection of artworks entitled ‘The Crow’ at Lot 123, Nando’s Art Space at Chinatown from 25 th Nov – 8 th Dec 2016.
Yin Wan‘s fascination with the Buddhist concept of impermanence in life is reflected in his artworks, the cycle of life and death a prevailing theme to the collection. Symbolizing the arrival of death, the Crow draws from Chinese culture and its inauspicious connotations to wickedness and cruelty. Yin Wan explores the idea with a painful awareness that change is beyond control, using hands as a symbol of going through the motions between humans and the start of new beginnings.
Inspired by his experiences and surroundings, Yin Wan embraces the natural phenomenon, an acceptance on both negative and positive sides of temporary existence in this world. His unique style in incorporating natural materials like plywood as well as wood-cut and oil paint techniques breathes life into his artworks, injecting surrealism into the duality of matter in life.

“Yin Wan is amazingly talented and we cannot be more proud of his accomplishments, which has only grown in strength since Nando’s Art Initiative. The way he explores the subject of reality through fine art illustrates such maturity and depth, creating masterpieces that leave us in wonder. We look forward to see more great things from Yin Wan in the art world.” said Mac Chung Lynn, Group CEO of Nando’s Chickenland Malaysia and Singapore.

Nando’s Art Initiative Presents Yvonne Chong Shi Qi’s ‘Garden of Goddesses’

Have you heard of Nando’s Art Initiative before? This yearly event is a wonderful programme for the young ones to pursuit their dreams. As part of Nando’s continuous commitment and support to the winners of Nando’s Art Initiative, Nando’s Lot 123, Chinatown is having the art exhibition of The Digital Grand Prize winner of Nando’s Art Initiative 2014, Yvonne Chong Shi Qi. The talented artist is excited for her first solo art exhibition that showcase her collection of artworks entitled ‘Garden of Goddesses’.
Yvonne Chong Shi Qi

The exhibition is an insight to Yvonne’s fascination and passion for the World of myths and fairy tales. From a very young age she had always found herself constantly being drawn to the world of mythical Gods and Goddesses. The theme of this exhibition is to portray the kinship shared between each goddess and their mortal counterpart.
Her unique style is strongly inspired by the works of Frida Kahlo which are focused mainly on self-portraits with intricate elements of nature. Thrown into the mix of inspiration is also a bit of surrealism and the art nouveau movement. Putting together a fantasy, dreamlike imagery and pairing it with soft feminine features provides her with a sense of calm and serenity.
