Introducing NOBO Soy: A New Chapter for Soy Milk

Soy milk has long been a part of everyday life in Malaysia. From kopitiams and street-side stalls, to breakfast tables in our own homes, soy milk is familiar, nostalgic and deeply woven into local food culture. Yet, the soy milk category hasbeen declining as young adults are not drinking as much soy milk.

Created by the team behind Malaysia’s much-loved oat milk brand OATSIDE, NOBO Soy is here to set a new standard for soy milk for the wellness-focused generation. NOBO Soy Milk has higher protein at 4.2g/100ml, which is almost double of typical packedsoy milk and ~40% more than dairy milk, achieved through double-extraction of non-GMO high protein Canadian soybeans. It also has less sugar (<5g/100ml) and a lower beanie taste achieved with flash-cooling technology, all while maintaining clean labels with no added oils, emulsifiers or gums.

Benedict Lim, CEO & Founder, OATSIDE said: “We spent a lot of time sourcing the right soybeans and eventually chose non-GMO, high-protein beans from Canada for their nutrition and flavour. From there, it was about developing a process that could pack more
soybeans per pack to deliver a creamier texture and higher protein levels without adding ingredients like gums, emulsifiers, oils or protein powders.

Ultimately, our philosophy with NOBO is to be minimalist, and allow soy’s natural richness and nutrition to shine through without unnecessary additives."

Across Asia, we know that there is an increasing focus on nutrition and in particular, protein
consumption, with the wellness-generation keen on improving health and longevity.

Soybeans are a traditional staple but we tend to forget that it’s also a nutrient-dense, plant
-based superfood. They are rich in proteins with a complete essential amino acid profile, rich in fiber, antioxidants and omega 3-6-9. NOBO Soy is focused on taking a minimalist approach to letting an amazing ingredient shine through in the form of soy milk.

Women in Leadership and Health: Novo Nordisk Calls for Collective Action on Women-Centred Obesity Care

With Malaysia’s National Health and Morbidity Survey suggesting that more than 1 in 2 adults currently living with overweight or obesity1, the need for a unified response is more urgent. Malaysia now ranks among Southeast Asia’s highest obesity rates, affecting over half of adults. This is a trend that continues to rise and place pressure on families, healthcare systems and the nation’s long-term productivity. In conjunction with World Obesity Day and International Women’s Day, Novo Nordisk Pharma (Malaysia) brought together the voices of healthcare professionals, corporate leaders, and people living with obesity to reframe how the nation understands and addresses this chronic disease.

Anchored under the theme Women in Leadership and Health, the discussion emphasised the need for driving equity, leadership, and systemic reform for women, especially in improving outcomes for who disproportionately experience the complexities of living with overweight or obesity.

officiating Novo Nordisk’s Women in Leadership and Health media event in conjunction with International Women’s Day and World Obesity Day.

Obesity is increasingly recognized as a chronic, progressive disease shaped by biological, social, and environmental influences. Globally, women generally have a higher percentage of body fat content compared to men, and gender appears to be an important factor in the manifestation of central or peripheral obesity2. When it comes to weight management, studies comparing diet and exercise interventions have shown that men generally lose weight more easily than women due to differences in body composition3, as well as basal metabolic rate and energy expenditure4.

Dr. Praful Chakkarwar, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Pharma (M) Sdn.Bhd., delivering his welcome note at Novo Nordisk’s International Women’s Day and World Obesity Day media event.

Dr. Praful Chakkarwar, General Manager of Novo Nordisk Malaysia said, “In Malaysia, women living with overweight or obesity often face a disproportionate burden, not only in terms of health outcomes, but also through persistent societal stereotypes that frame weight as a measure of discipline, appearance, or personal failure. These narratives can delay diagnosis, limit access to appropriate care, and contribute to stigma in healthcare settings, workplaces, and daily life. At Novo Nordisk, it is our commitment to support efforts that improve understanding, reduce stigma, and strengthen responsible, evidence-based obesity care in Malaysia.”

New! Anlene CholestoPro: Dual Action Formula Take Care of Your Cholesterol and Mobility

High cholesterol is an increasing health concern in Malaysia, affecting millions of adults and elevating the risk of serious complications. However, cholesterol management is often overlooked despite its crucial connection to overall mobility and heart health. Many do not realize that strong bones, flexible joints, and active muscles are essential for maintaining an active lifestyle, which in turn supports better cholesterol management.

Anlene, Malaysia’s No.1 Adult Milk Powder*, introduces its latest innovation - Anlene CholestoPro recently. This unique formula is scientifically designed with dual action formula: containing nutrients to support mobility while helping to reduce cholesterol. By combining nutrient bundles that support mobility and cholesterol management, it offers a holistic benefit for Malaysians striving to lead an active lifestyle!

According to the National Health and Morbidity Survey (NHMS) 2023, over half a million Malaysian adults are living with four types of non-communicable diseases (NCDs), including diabetes, hypertension, high cholesterol, and obesity.

Ganesh Thiagarajan, General Manager of Fonterra Brands Malaysia and Singapore said: “Nearly 7.5 million adults, or 33.3% of the population, have high cholesterol, yet one in two remain unaware of their condition. Additionally, the NHMS 2023 showed that 54.4% adults are overweight or obese, further contributing to the risk of cholesterol-related health issues. Managing cholesterol requires a combination of efforts, including proper nutrition and an active lifestyle.”

“Staying physically active and managing cholesterol go hand in hand. To keep moving, we need strong bones, joints, and muscles. At the same time, poor bones, joints, and muscle health can limit activity levels, increasing the risk of weight gain and high cholesterol, which may contribute to the development of heart disease. To address the growing concern, Anlene is committed to empowering Malaysians with healthy eating by providing nutritious food and advocating active lifestyle,” said Ganesh.

He further emphasised on the importance of mobility, saying “With the launch of Anlene CholestoPro, we offer a convenient dual action formula that contains nutrients to support both mobility and cholesterol management. It is not just about reducing cholesterol; it is about ensuring Malaysians have the strength to keep doing what they love for longer. This new product joins our existing range, offering even greater benefits to those who already trust Anlene for their daily nutrition.”

High cholesterol is a serious yet often overlooked health risk because it has no noticeable symptoms. Dr. Azura Abas, who holds a MBBS, along with a MSc in Medical Physiology, emphasized the direct link between high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease.

“Many don’t realize that high cholesterol significantly increases the risk of cardiovascular disease due to cholesterol buildup in the arteries, which can lead to blockages, heart attacks, and other serious complications. In fact, it is the second most prevalent risk factor for heart-related conditions. In Malaysia, cardiovascular disease is rising, with cases occurring an average of ten years earlier than the global trend.”

HOYA Malaysia x World Sight Day 2024 - “A Million Visions” Campaign

World Sight Day 2024 falls on 10 October 2024. This year, HOYA Malaysia is shining a spotlight on children’s eye health, aligning with the global theme #loveyoureyeskids to prevent future blindness. Today, HOYA Malaysia proudly launched the “A Million Visions” campaign, supporting HOYA’s global goal of providing 1 million eye examinations to children, addressing the growing concern of myopia among them. As part of this effort, HOYA Malaysia is offering free eye examinations to children aged 5 to 12, emphasising the need for early detection and treatment. The campaign also urges eye care professionals (ECPs) to consider clinically proven early interventions, like MiYOSMART lenses to manage myopia progression in high-risk children.
Understanding Myopia and Its Global Impact

Myopia, or shortsightedness, is a refractive error that affects millions of children worldwide. According to recent studies1, the prevalence of myopia has reached alarming rates, with projections indicating that nearly half of the global population could be myopic by 2050. High myopia is associated with an increased risk of serious eye diseases such as glaucoma, cataract, and retinal detachment. This underscores the urgency of addressing this growing public health concern.

Many parents remain unaware of the early signs of myopia in their children, often delaying eye tests. This delay is significant as children, who may have lived with myopia for years, often consider their impaired vision as normal and do not complain about it. Regular eye tests from the age of 5 to 12 are crucial to detect and manage myopia early.

Common Misconceptions About Myopia

There are several misconceptions surrounding myopia that need addressing. One of the most common is the belief that wearing glasses will make myopia worse or lead to dependence on them- this is false. In reality, untreated myopia can lead to its progression, increasing the risk of severe vision problems later in life, including conditions that could result in blindness.

"Myopia itself doesn't cause blindness directly, but it significantly increases the risk of developing serious eye conditions that can lead to vision loss. Early detection and intervention are key to preventing these outcomes," said Dr Norazah Abdul Rahman, a leading Ophthalmologist in Kuala Lumpur.

Taking Action: What Parents Need to Know

Parents are encouraged to take proactive steps to protect their children's vision:

Feeling Foggy, Distracted, Demotivated? Don't Let Brain Fatigue Hold You Back

Have you ever sat down to start a task at work only to find your mind drawing blanks? No matter how hard you try, do you struggle to focus, experience sluggish thoughts, and have difficulty remembering details? You’re not alone. Brain fatigue is a state of tiredness caused by prolonged periods of cognitive activities stemming from an overload of our mental capacity. It is also important to know that the brain consumes about 20 percent1 of the body’s energy — processing and transmitting information through electrical signals — is very expensive in energy use.
(L-R) Professor Dr Michael Ling, Professor in Neuroscience & Genetics at Universiti Putra Malaysia; Dr Hiroshi Watanabe, Senior Research Director from Suntory Beverage & Food Asia Pacific; Event Host, Zooey Teh; and Nasreen Ma, a Brain Health Coach from Meaningful Activation.

To explore this unexplored phenomenon, BRAND'S® Essence of Chicken recently convened a roundtable of health experts to share insights on brain fatigue. The panellists included Professor Dr Michael Ling, a Neuroscience and Genetics Professor at Universiti Putra Malaysia; Nasreen Ma, a Brain Health Coach from Meaningful Activation; and Dr Hiroshi Watanabe, Senior Research Director from Suntory Beverage & Food Asia Pacific.

Brain Drain Explained - Scientific Insights into Mental Exhaustion

While brain fatigue is often dismissed or confused with regular everyday tiredness, it is an actual condition with a scientific basis that can escalate over time if not appropriately managed, leading to more severe and chronic fatigue syndromes.
(L-R) Lim Wei Jian, Assistant Brand Manager, Suntory Beverage & Food Malaysia; Professor Dr Michael Ling, Professor in Neuroscience & Genetics at Universiti Putra Malaysia; Dr Hiroshi Watanabe, Senior Research Director from Suntory Beverage & Food Asia Pacific; Event Host, Zooey Teh; Eunice Kow, Head of Marketing of Suntory Beverage and Food Malaysia Nasreen Ma, a Brain Health Coach from Meaningful Activation.

According to Professor Dr Michael Ling, Professor in Neuroscience & Genetics at Universiti Putra Malaysia, brain fatigue is a complex condition still being researched despite scientists studying the topic for decades. "Understanding the mechanisms and effects of brain fatigue can help us better manage our mental energy and productivity. Mental overload over a prolonged period2 leads to a sensation of tiredness known as brain fatigue, which comes with associated symptoms. This is linked to the buildup of the neurotransmitter glutamate3 in the prefrontal cortex. In simpler terms, it's like being in a noisy, crowded room where you can't hear anyone."

Fuel Your Focus - Managing Brain Fatigue Through Wellness Practices

Ignoring fatigue has consequences—reduced work performance, disruption to personal life. Those with brain fatigue can manage it better with lifestyle changes and good nutrition.

Nasreen Ma, a Brain Health Coach from Meaningful Activation, commented that overcoming brain fatigue requires more than a cup of coffee. “Malaysians wear multiple hats at work and in our personal lives, which are very fast-paced and stressful - Malaysia is ranked 47th out of 60 nations according to the Global Life-Work Balance Index, making us more prone to brain fatigue. Understanding brain fatigue is the first step to managing our brain health. A balanced lifestyle includes prioritising sleep, exercise on top of slower specific coordinated movements, mindfulness, strengthening spiritual and social connections, reducing screen time, proper diet, and practising relaxation techniques such as deep breathing or yoga are keys to reclaiming your mental energy and living a revitalised, productive life.”

GSK Advocates The Importance of Adult Immunisation amongst Malaysians

Ageing population is a common phenomenon in many countries nowadays, including Malaysia. As Malaysia's population shifts towards an ageing demographic, the importance of adult immunisation becomes increasingly apparent. By ensuring that individuals receive necessary vaccinations, adults can remain active, be healthy participants of society and the economy – prolonging productivity, maintaining contributions to local economies, and reducing healthcare costs, even as they enter their golden years.
This World Immunisation Week [24 April – 30 April] is a time to raise awareness of the health and socioeconomic impact of vaccination globally and to elevate the policy changes needed to create healthier, more resilient communities, especially in Malaysia.
According to the latest data from the Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM), the number of individuals aged 65 years and above is on the rise with approximately 2.5 million people falling into this category. DOSM also projects that Malaysia will have a nearly equal share of the young (18.6%) and older population (14.5%) in 2040. This means that in less than 2 decades, the old age group will surpass 6.0 million, transitioning Malaysia into an aged society.

In conjunction with World Immunisation Week 2024, GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) organised a timely discourse, bringing together local and global experts to share their perspectives on the changing vaccine landscape, the benefits of vaccines in older adults, and the socio-economic value of adult immunisation.

Anlene Mobility Check Screening Reveals Concerning Bone Health Risk among Malaysians

Anlene, Malaysia's No.1 Adult Milk Powder*, a pioneering force in advocating bone, joint, and muscle health over the past three decades, has unveiled an eye-opening revelation through its Anlene Mobility Check, an ultrasound bone scan and muscle strength test which started in May 2022 and has assessed over 20,000 Malaysians to date. The screening found 50% of Malaysian adults are at risk of poor bone health1, which can potentially lead to bone diseases such as osteoporosis that may affect one’s mobility.
The screening results further revealed that weak muscle strength is prevalent in 1 out of every 3 Malaysian adults1. This free screening was carried out through a series of roadshows starting in May 2022 and is open to adults 19 years old and above, aimed at assessing their bone and muscle.
Ganesh Thiagarajan, General Manager of Fonterra Brands Malaysia & Singapore said: “Result from the mobility check highlights a concerning trend of low awareness among Malaysians towards the significance of bone health, emphasizing the pressing need to tackle mobility-related risks in our nation. At Anlene, we firmly believe that promoting preventive measures against osteoporosis can significantly reduce its prevalence within our population. Our goal is to enable individuals to proactively embrace the vitality of their bones, joints, and muscles and to keep them in good condition to stay active as long as they can.”
In conjunction with World Osteoporosis Day 2023, Anlene Malaysia reaffirms its steadfast commitment to promoting robust bone health awareness and education among Malaysians. To empower individuals with a deeper understanding of their bone health and encourage proactive care, Anlene Malaysia joined forces with its retail partner, AEON and its healthcare partner, Columbia Asia Hospital Puchong.

Wong Mei Ching, Nestlé Group Corporate Nutrition Manager, said “Most parents are not aware that their children lose their energy reserves after a night's sleep. Preparing a healthy, balanced and yet wholesome breakfast may be daunting and tedious for many, especially full-time working parents. However, as responsible, and loving parents, we always prioritise giving our children the best in everything possible.

Five Reasons Why Fernleaf Malaysia is Committed to Meeting the Protein Needs of Malaysians

With all of today's modern conveniences and technology, it's more important than ever to get the proper nutrition to keep up with your growth and active lifestyle. Even though all nutrients are essential for growth, there are three types of nutrients for growth that you must be aware of: carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. When we talk about protein these days, many people envision someone with large muscles leaving the gym after a workout. Although the statement is correct in principle, the function of protein in our bodies extends beyond muscle building. Protein is in fact a crucial component of any diet, whether for adults or kids, as it serves as one of the main building blocks of the cells in our bodies.
Fernleaf Protein+ milk powder is one of Fernleaf's newest products, introduced recently in Malaysia, that aims to help, and support Malaysians' protein requirements. Irene Cheah, Marketing Director of Fonterra Brands (M) Sdn Bhd said, “Fernleaf Protein+ milk powder, a delicious and creamy high protein blend of milk powder and soy is suitable for the whole family from age 1 and above. It contains three types of protein that can help Malaysians to have adequate protein for their body, as part of a balanced diet."
Even though most people understand the basics of protein, many are unaware that inadequate protein intake can impact the growth and operation of our cells. Nutritionist Surainee Wahab has outlined five main reasons why Malaysians should ensure that they consume adequate protein daily.

MAINTENANCE OF TISSUES1 - Our bones, muscles, skin, nails, and hair are all made from protein. Apart from repairing damaged cells, formation of hormones and enzymes, and transporting oxygen through red blood cells, protein also helps the body to build muscle mass, which makes it an important macronutrient to be consumed as an energy source on a regular basis along with right amounts of carbohydrates and fats.

An Affordable & Enjoyable Way to Maintain Good Gut Function Every Day with Fernleaf Cultured Milk Drink Probiotic+

The foundation of a strong body lies in a good digestive system. The gut, which primarily carries out functions like digestion, nutrient absorption, and waste excretion, can affect our overall health and wellbeing. Factors such as poor dietary habits, stress, unhealthy lifestyles, medication, and aging can disrupt our gut function. This can result in imbalanced gut bacteria, where too much harmful or bad bacteria starts to grow. If left untreated, this may lead to digestive issues including diarrhoea, constipation, change in bowel habits, and more(1). Hence, protecting and keeping our gut environment in its best possible condition is essential in ensuring that our body’s defence system is working properly(2).
Bringing New Zealand dairy goodness to Malaysian families every day since 1982, Fernleaf, a Fonterra brand, introduces an affordable and enjoyable way to help replenish good bacteria for the gut! Fernleaf Cultured Milk Drink Probiotic+ is the only cultured milk drink in Malaysia that contains a combination of three (3) scientifically researched probiotics, namely Lactobacillus rhamnosus HN001 (DR20), Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis (BB-12), and Lactobacillus acidophilus LA-5.
Taken as part of a daily balanced diet, combined with an active lifestyle, the three scientifically researched probiotics helps to maintain good gut function. Achieving good gut function helps to support the body’s defence system.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), probiotics are live microorganisms
(3) that bring health benefits to the host when consumed in adequate amounts. Also known as “good bacteria”, probiotics help to inhibit the growth of bad bacteria to ward off negative health-related effects caused by them(4), while replenishing the good bacteria within, thereby enhancing the body’s defence system. For that reason, maintaining balanced gut bacteria should be practiced every day to support good health and wellbeing.
