Immortelle thrives in the maquis (fragrant scrubland) in Corsica, where the conditions are exceptionally sunny. This actually helps to ‘clean up’ the maquis, indirectly helping to prevent fires. However, the volume harvested doesn’t allow for a sustainable supply of Immortelle.

In order to guarantee the highest quality and traceability of these golden blooms, L’OCCITANE has invested in the very first large-scale, sustainable and organic Immortelle plantation programme in Corsica. In 2004, a 50-hectare plantation was set up, involving six growers/distillers in the Balagne region and eastern Corsica.

When the flowers that grow there reach their optimal stage of maturity, they are hand-harvested by sickle to ensure the flowers retain their most precious qualities. Even the process of weeding is carried out by sheep instead of machinery. The land is cultivated as naturally as possible, and the conditions in which the Immortelle flowers grow are similar to those in the wild.

From this perfectly-protected cultivation, L’OCCITANE distils a rare Immortelle essential oil. 1 ton of Immortelle flowers only produce 2 litres of essential oil. (Comparatively, 1 ton of Lavender can yield 8 litres of essential oil.) The superior Immortelle essential oil contains high concentrations of active molecules that deliver all their benefits to the skin, infusing it with a new energy. The experts at L’OCCITANE Laboratories have since discovered the key that holds all the Immortelle’s exceptional healing secrets: a particular molecule called neryl acetate.
